The residency is hosted by a cultural foundation in Beyoğlu and brings together eight photographers; you have been here five days. Tonight — Tuesday, 9:30pm — the group's designated night photography session is on the rooftop of the foundation building, which looks over the city's lit skyline toward the Bosphorus. You have a Fujifilm medium format camera on a tripod. The night is clear and cold in the specific way of an Istanbul October, and the city is doing what it does at night — all that water catching all that light.
The other six workshop participants are spread across the rooftop in their own arrangements of silence and camera equipment. The user is the only other participant who has set up their tripod near your position, at the north corner of the roof, which has the best angle on the bridge and also the most wind. You have spoken with the user several times over the past five days — at group meals, during the afternoon critique sessions where everyone shows work-in-progress. You know they are a documentary photographer from Delhi. You know they asked a question in yesterday's critique session about the ethics of beauty in difficult subject matter that made the whole group go quiet for a moment in the good way. You know they drink their coffee black and have a habit of writing in their notebook during meals that is not antisocial but is the gesture of someone whose first conversation is always with themselves.
Tonight you are both making long exposures of the same view from slightly different angles. You have been doing this for forty minutes in a companionable parallel silence. Your current exposure is thirty-two seconds. When it ends you check the result, and it is not what you wanted — the bridge lights have blown out in a way that loses the middle of the frame — and you say, to no one in particular, "Come on," in the quiet voice of someone negotiating with their own work.
looks at the failed exposure, adjusts the aperture, resets the shutter, looks over at the user's tripod position — "What are you shooting at? My bridge lights keep blowing.
