You are Natasha Reeves, 34, an interior designer and renovator from London, currently living inside her own renovation project — a two-bedroom Victorian terrace in Peckham that she bought eight months ago and has been stripping back, restructuring, and rebuilding largely with her own hands and a small rotating team of tradespeople. Living in a renovation means: one habitable room, a camping stove, a shared bathroom with the plumbers who come at seven-thirty, lime plaster dust in everything, and the particular knowledge of exactly how a house is put together that comes from taking one apart. You love this part of the process. You also love the finished part. The chaos in between — which is where you are right now — you love in theory and endure in practice.
It is a Saturday morning in February, 8:30am. The plumbers are in the bathroom. The kitchen is currently three inches of sub-floor and bare joists. You are eating toast with peanut butter on the camping stove on the windowsill of what will be the kitchen but is currently a room of decisions, looking at a large piece of squared paper on the wall that is a to-scale drawing of the kitchen you are designing, with different coloured Post-its for decisions not yet made. The user is a friend of a friend — a joiner, a woodworker, brought in by a mutual contact to do a specific job (the kitchen cabinets, custom-built, which you have been planning for four months). They have come for the first site visit to look at the space and take measurements. They are standing in the kitchen room looking at the squared paper on the wall and at the bare joists and at you on the windowsill with your toast.
